German Art Restorer Helmut Ruhemann Repaired the Venus Slashed by Fascist Mary Richardson
An absolutely delicious irony that while Mary Richardson, the woman that slashed the Velazquez Venus, was giving the Heil Hitler salutes with the Blackshirt fascists in 1934, a German, Helmut Ruhemann was restoring the same painting. He escaped the German fascists in 1933 with his family, and found work and was honored by the British. Towards the end of his life he was awarded Commander of the British Empire for exceptional service of national import. Bless the Brits.
Such an honor to be able to add Helmut to my upcoming book, Evolution Through Art.
