On view May 27-September 5, 2022. Happening now at the Guggenheim, the first NY museum solo show of Cecilia Vicuña (b. 1948). Angel of Menstruation, oil on canvas. Interesting to note is that one of the major supporters of the exhibition is the collector of this painting, Catherine Petitgas, London. Pay to play? The paintings are terrible, so what does showing them accomplish? There were also several foundations supporting the exhibition to some degree, but after knowing the CIA’s involvement with using foundations as ways to funnel money it calls into question their motives as well. But it is the art that flags that something nefarious is going on. The painting is technically pathetic, psychologically it is a whine, and any mediocre hobbyist could paint it in a morning. If this artist can have a show at the Guggenheim, it means that in theory any incompetent can as well. But the Guggenheim can’t be a dumping ground for every sh*tty artwork, so something covert is going on behind the scenes. https://www.guggenheim.org/exhibition/cecilia-vicuna-spin-spin-triangulene
